I have about 20 years in marketing, and wanted to offer some very inexpensive or free things to help boost your business:
Look for your small town local web page. They often have free advertising.
USPS will send postcards at an EXTREMELY reasonable price. You can go into your county property website, download lists of addresses by street, and zip out hundreds of postcards very inexpensively.
Doorhangers - make them yourself, find cheap plastic bags with holes (Ebay is a great source, I paid 10.00 for 500), and "hire" a kid to hang out the passenger window and hang them on mailboxes. My teenager works for free... LOL!
Depending on your business, ask local companies such as daycare centers, doctor's offices, pet stores, etc., if they'd let you put a business card or brochure holder on their receptionists desks. Most businesses are very willing to help out a local small biz, especially if you have a relationship with them (client or customer).
Vehicle advertising - GREAT way to spread your name. Companies such as Decal Junky have phenomenal prices on vinyl window decals - the back of my van is a mobile billboard! www.decaljunky.com
Post ads often on your local Craigslist and Postaroo.
Offer incentives for word-of-mouth ads - such as discounts to those that refer others to your site or shop... my customers get "referral points" that add up over time to ultimately get them free shopping. Word of mouth is the best business there is!
I will try to think of more... hope these help! _________________ Sandra Stehly
